Founded by Mark Orpen, Glenda Webster and Dion McConnel in 1999, The Institute of People Development (IPD) strives to enable the enablers of South Africa's skills development strategy and the transformation of education and training. Over the years, IPD has become the preferred people development partner to most state owned and private enterprises in Southern Africa.

The Institute of People Development (Pty) Ltd is a holding company with majority shareholding in Workplace Skills Solutions (Pty) Ltd, PointXchange (Pty) Ltd and ReCr8 (Pty) Ltd, all subsidiaries serving government, corporates, professional bodies and associations' people development needs.

Initially, Workplace Skills Solutions (t/a The Institute of People Development) provided Skills Development Facilitator (SDF) training however the company soon expanded its service offering to include all accredited Occupationally-directed ETD Practices training courses, as well as full NQF level four and five qualifications. In 2005 IPD added a Higher Certificate, OD-ETD Practices NQF level six qualifications to its stable and instituted a policy of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) of all qualifications, thanks to the expertise and drive from Daryl McLean, Vanessa Winter, Jane Vaughton, Matthew Rademan and Miemsie de Jager in particular.

Between 2011 and 2017, Gizelle McIntyre joined Mark Orpen the Workplace Skills Solutions board of directors to assist grow the company; and in 2013 redefined the core business as an accredited training, specialist consulting and alumni support services provider.

To support growth, the company began offering Learning and Development consulting, began hosting ReCr8 seminars offering continuous professional development and later accreditation for NQF Level 4 and Level 5 Certificate: Generic Management, offered through Recognition of Prior Learning and/or various skills programmes.

Workplace Skills Solutions (Pty) Ltd directors are also shareholders and they attribute the company's success to ongoing innovation in training and development, a long standing and reliable brand, sound business architecture, values and professional service delivery.

IPD is well prepared for delivering its' objectives, performing for its shareholders, and seizing the arising opportunities as expected shifts in the quality assurance of learning and development are implemented in South Africa around 2020.
